Introducing Smith Metals

Andrew & Mark Smith started their Scrap Metal business (Andrew & Mark Smith Metals Ltd) over thirty years ago in Rochdale, Lancashire. This was a natural progression for them, as they came from a family well rooted in the sector with both their father, and grandfather, owning Scrap companies before them.
In 1996 they relocated the business from Rochdale to a new purpose built facility in Bolton. From here the business grew to become one of the largest Ferrous Metal Scrap Dealers in the North West of England. New systems were introduced to further streamline operations (such as satellite vehicle tracking for all vehicles), increasing operational efficiency and enabling the expansion of the business to a wider geographical area.
The company continued to expand and in 2006 they sold a majority shareholding to the Irish holding company, ONE51 Group.
One51 plc was established as part of a reconstruction and reorganisation of the Irish Agricultural Wholesale Society Limited, in December 2005. They are now organised into key divisions based primarily around investments into the Environmental Services (Recycling and Treatment) Renewable Energy, Food and Property markets both in the UK and overseas. We recently acquired two other North West companies, W Howarth Metals Ltd and Howcan Ltd to compliment the Smiths Metals deal. One51 can now assist its subsidiary companies in collecting, treating and recycling metal to provide a complete environmental service solution.
Smiths Metals Ltd, provide a bespoke, modern approach to helping companies who produce any type of scrap metals dispose of their bye products efficiently and effectively.
We provide a detailed Scrap Audit of each site to better determine the individual needs of each customer and work in partnership to meet both the commercial and increasingly complex regulations that are now required. With over 300 regular contracts, and 95% of business being North West based, Smith Metals are tasked daily with delivering a tailored solution that ensures a professional yet personal service for our customers.
As part of our continued growth, the company started a re-branding and Business Development programme at the beginning of 2008. The aim of the rebrand was to reposition the traditional scrap metal reputation that had been acquired over the years whilst integrating a new level of corporate interest in a market that is constantly changing. A new corporate design and logo, and new website www.smithmetals.co.uk delivers visitors direct, informative guidance of all key areas of the business but doesn’t overload on jargon filled text.
