‘Smith Metals offer up local solution to the governments £360m scrap theft problem.’
The national exposure to the recent rise in UK scrap metal theft has prompted an engaging response from the scrap metal industry. Smith Metals are proposing a solution to the epidemic, by offering local businesses a security conscious, bespoke collection service to expel concerns about the vulnerability, of not only their stock but their premises too.
In January, The Guardian reported a 150% increase in scrap theft over the last 2 years alone, costing the country a staggering £360m. The Home Office have stated that 2008 was the worst ever year for scrap metal theft, especially amongst churches and large industrial units.
Local property agents are urging the issue be made a higher priority as some local factory and industrial site owners are even considering demolition as the intelligence and sophistication of criminals is said to ‘have gone up a notch’.
We are vigilant in our scrap service security and offer all our customers a bespoke collection service direct from our £1million purpose built recycling facility. All Smith Metal vans are fitted with the latest satellite tracking systems to give customers peace of mind. Smith Metals can also provide a flexible range of containers to suit all scrap requirements, many of which can be kept indoors on premises.
The service also extends to a complete and transparent reporting structure with audit trail as well as the latest in metal analysis technology.
James Cubbon, Business Development Manager at Smith Metals said:
“The rise in not only local but national scrap crime is a concern as we believe thieves will be under the misguided view that scrap prices are still at the high levels they reached in 2008. This is not the case now as, like all commodities, scrap has suffered large falls in values as global demand has tightened. Being in the trade we are privy to the concerns of our customers and feel the only solution is prevention, therefore we can now construct security conscious plans that incorporate commercial essentials with fundamental industry knowledge.
“Our approach is very different to that of your ‘typical scrap dealer’ and we believe that contributes to our continued success.”
